Stephen Hamilton at MassArt

  • Kennedy Buidling, Lecuture 406 621 Huntington Avenue Boston, MA, 02115 United States (map)

Stephen Hamilton was selected as an Arts Connect International 2015 - 2016 Artist-in-Residence, making this body of work and international residency possible in Nigeria and the US. During the nine-month residency Stephen learned from and collaborated with artists at The Nike Center for Art and Culture.

It was there that he learned and Incorporated traditional Adire indigo dyed fabrics, batik work, beading, woodcarving and weaving into his already established painting praxis. The work blends Stephen’s training as a painter and illustrator with these traditional and ancient techniques. This in turn creates contemporary works that both honor and reflect Diaspora history while also living in, and leaning into, contemporary portrayals of Black identity from an asset-based lens.

The series directly references imagery and aesthetics from the visual and literary traditions of the Yoruba people, Including Ifa, The Sixteen Cowries (Merindinlogun) and Oriki praise poetry. It fuses portraiture and observational painting with surreal depictions of the ancient Yoruba world, making use of key symbols that help define Yoruba philosophy in both Africa and the Diaspora. Depictions of living people and places are used to recreate a long past world: world that’s splendor and dignity still live -- despite the cruel legacy of slavery and colonialism.
