The Language Producing Factory // video-sculpture installation
Solo exhibition by multi-media artist FUREN DAI
7:30 PM Performance by the artist
Drawing upon her wide-ranging background in international relations, Russian language and literature, and as a translator in her native China, Ms. Dai's installation is a tour-de-force which integrates a variety of media and conceptual strategies. This body of work originated with her research on a covert language bordering on extinction called NÜSHU, spoken and written only among women in Hunan Province, China. NÜSHU, which translates to "woman's writing," has been improperly kept alive through pressuring the few elderly who speak it into performing cultural activities for menial wages as entertainment for tourists.
Furen is a multi-media artist who recently completed residencies at Art Omi in New York, the Samson Gallery in Boston, and is currently an artist-in-residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program of New York.
