Commemorating the publication of Susanna Coffey: Night Painting, the artist will discuss this body of work, executed over several years, with book publisher Brice Brown. Well-known for her self-portraits exploring identity, guise and self-confrontation, Coffey also has a long-held interest in landscape painting. Inspired by the nocturnal images of Jean-Francois Millet and James Abbott Whistler, Coffey has developed a series of "night paintings" that address those visual discoveries that can only be made at night. Coffey was a painting professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1982 - 2019. Public collections include the MFA, Boston, the National Portrait Gallery, the Minneapolis Museum of Art and the National Academy of Art and Design, among many others.
